U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Denver) is expected to be named U.S. Secretary of the Interior by President-elect Barack Obama within the next 48 hours, the Rocky Mountain News' M.E. Sprengelmeyer is reporting.
"It's a done deal," one unnamed Democratic source told the Rocky.
Salazar would be the first Coloradan to hold a U.S. Cabinet post since Gale Norton, who was Secretary of the Interior from 2001 until 2006.
Salazar's departure means Gov. Bill Ritter would have to appoint a replacement. Some names mentioned for the job include outgoing House Speaker Andrew Romanoff (D-Denver), Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, and U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Golden).
